22nd Oct’07 Heartbeat : A Thankful Spirit

As the semester draws to a close, and the exams loom ever nearer; as project deadlines approach with the speed of a bullet train, it’s so easy to get overwhelmed by it all. As we allow our minds to dwell on reams of work still left undone, it’s so easy to let our joy ebb away. Often, it feels as if we’re simply not smart enough to cope with demands placed upon us by our studies – in the light of these struggles, we turned this week to the Psalms.

Ps 100
1 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth2 Worship the Lord with gladness;
come before him with joyful songs.

3 Know that the Lord is God.
It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.

5 For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.

It is in times such as these that it is even more important than ever that we remember to turn our eyes towards the Lord. In Psalm 42, it says, ‘Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Saviour and my God.’ As we lifted up various Psalms in thanksgiving towards God, we were reminded that our Lord God is King and Sovereign, and that we are his beloved people.Truly, worship is an act of humility, whereby we confess that although our burdens are too heavy for us, God is able to help us through it. Worship is also an act of faith, declaring that our God is mighty to save us, even though we have no hope left. Most of all, worship is a choice we make, to love and bless our Lord God who has done so many great things for us.
Ps 91
1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty
2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”14 “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call upon me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honour him.
16 With long life will I satisfy him
and show him my salvation.”
